Photo Editors for eComStation

My thanks to those who made suggestions a couple of weeks ago about
photo editors for eComStation. I am running on eComStation 2.0rc4.
For this comparison my 'test' was to spray out the white spot of camera
red-eye on my 18 year old American Cocker's eyes.

I have downloaded, installed, and looked at:
1) Embellish
2) PhotoQueen
3) Gimp 2.2.8 - I added Gimp to the list.
4) PhotoTiger
5) JPhotoBrush
6) Impos/2
7) Pixel
8) Image Editor - I added this to the list

Embellish

I couldn't get Embellish to run until I copied the EPFIPII.DLL into C:\os2\DLL\ Then
the install program ran fine and Embellish worked. They have a 'smudge' tool that
worked nicely to darken the eyes but I found choosing the color a try by trial effort.
I liked the effect . Some of the other programs have much easier color choosing
interfaces. Embellish has some funky special effects filters that for example make
your ordinary picture look like it was taken with a fisheye lense.

(My hint: to install Embellish, just unzip the archive into a temporary folder and then
use any "epfiinsts" installation program (for instance netscape\siutil\epfiinsts.exe).
Find File/Open catalog/Drive, then search for embelsh.icf in your install folder.
Good luck, Petr Hanousek)

PhotoQueen (aka QueenCy)

I had some trouble with the stability of this program. It sometimes crashed on me.
But I was able to select a colour for the spary tool. You can adjust the spray texture
(pressure) and size.

Gimp 2.2.8

The easiest way to use Gimp is with HOBLink/2, it is included with eComStation 1.2.
Alex Taylor has written a WarpIN install routine for setting up the GIMP version 2.2.8
(the latest OS/2 version) to run without needing the XFree86/2 server installed.

Here is instructions on how to install Gimp.

PhotoTiger

PhotoTiger ran stable and looks and feels like a paint program. I could get puppies
eyes fixed OK. Registration is $30.00US
Download Here

JPhotoBrush

Java based this ran well on eComStation. It can handle large pics. You can set the
texture, color and spray size. $25.00
Download Here

IMPOS/2

IMPOS2 presented a simple interface. It featured a scan option and picture crop.
If you've got PMView3000 skip this one. I think you can buy it at mensys.nl
http://os2.mensys.nl/indexuk.html

PIXEL

Pixel cost $32.00 through Mensys. It had the most sophisticated interface and tools.
It was easiest to select a desired colour. The spray was adjustable for texture and
size. And this did the best job on Puppy's eyes. (My subjective opinion of course).

***NOTE - DO NOT BUY - Pixel is very buggy and author has not updated this
version in years, even after taking peoples money. ***

Java Image Editor

The Java Image Editor is a simple image editor built using Swing and the filter classes found on this site. Originally written as a test harness for my image processing classes, it's now become a fully fledged application.

Features include:

    * Multiple image layers
    * Brushes: paint, clone, erase etc.
    * Blending modes - add, screen, darken etc.
    * Transformations: scale, rotate, shear, perspective
    * Lots of effects and image-processing operations
    * Reads and writes multiple image formats
    * Extensible via a plugin mechanism

Conclusion: All these programs do work on eComStation and present different
choices to the user. You should download them and test for yourself. You will find
one that suits your workstyle. For me I will be purchasing Pixel for my use.

My thanks for your suggestions. I hope this reply is of some interest.
Just remember ... it's all in the eyes of the mouse holder.
